A local family is mourning the loss of their son, 18-year-old Derrick Duff, following a crash on Highway 101 Saturday morning.

Duff was a student at Highland High School and on the basketball team.

The California Highway Patrol says Duff was in the backseat of a Jeep, riding with two other people, when the driver crashed around 2:20 a.m.

Officers say for unknown reasons, the driver of the Jeep veered off the road and into the center divider, hitting the guard rail.

They say Duff, not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the Jeep when it veered back into the road.

The CHP says while Duff was in the road, he was hit by several other cars.

Officers say the drivers of those cars didn’t stop.

Alcohol and drugs don't appear to be a factor in the crash.
