From living on the streets to loving life, a homeless couple says the Bakersfield Homeless Center's jobs program has turned their life around.

With more job opportunities to clean littered highways on the way they're dreaming big.

These days life is good for Cathy and David Orn. She works collecting donations at the Bakersfield Homeless Center. He works sorting through trash at the green waste facility.

"We're both working," said David Orn. "We have a house. We have a car. There's nothing we don't have we're just blessed all the way around."

But back in 2000, that wasn't the case.

"We were homeless it was rough real rough," said Cathy Orn, Warehouse Assistant at the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

So they came to the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

"We stayed here about five to six months," said David.

In 2009 they found themselves back at the center but this time it was different.

"When we got here they had more opportunities than we had back in 2000," said David.

Right away Cathy got a job at the green waste facility.

"It was a breath of fresh air," said Cathy. "It was like yeah I got this. I can do this."

Working her way to a job at the donations center at the homeless center.

"I didn't think I could do it but now it's a piece of cake," said Cathy.

She inspired her husband to get a job at green waste as well.

Right now he's up for a promotion as one of the first people to work cleaning up highway litter, an opportunity with more hours.

"It puts you from here up to here," said David Orn, gesturing up.

David said he's not stopping there. He has big dreams to someday get a job with the city.

"Aw it would be a blessing," said David.

A blessing the Orn's say was made possible by the opportunities they were given.

"It's amazing," said Cathy. "It gave us our life back."

It all started with a part time job they turned into full time happiness.

"There's nothing we can't do, " said David. "There's nothing we can't accomplish."

David expects to start his cleanup job with Cal Trans next month.
