BAKERSFIELD, CA- Local animal officials want to help reunite owners with lost pets who went missing this Fourth of July weekend.

All of our local shelters report an increase in animals that ran away from home, apparently because of the fireworks.

Kern County Animal Control said since the beginning of the month they've seen dozens of animals turn up--mainly dogs.

Many of those dogs also were injured after being hit by cars, trying to get away from the noise.

County animal control officials said since July 1 they've had nearly 200 animals come in. The city shelter said it has taken in 144 pets since Friday.

While they can't track which animals came in because of fireworks, they say it's no coincidence.

Officials said if your pet has been missing this week you need to check animal shelters around town but that you're efforts shouldn't stop there.

"Check websites, check Craigslist, Facebook, check the animal shelters as often as you can. Because there is always a possibility that it might be a couple of days that passes by before he shows up here." said Nick Cullen with Kern County Animal Services Shelter Supervisor.

Cullen also said to ask neighbors and even delivery drivers if they've seen your pet.

Starting Tuesday, the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center, the Bakersfield SPCA and Marley's Mutts will make a strong effort to reunite owners and their furry friends.

Owners will pay a $50 redemption fee, with no additional charges for boarding or vaccines.
