BAKERSFIELD,CA- By 10:30 Sunday morning, it was already 87 degrees in Bakersfield. "It will get hotter, this is nothing yet," said Bakersfield resident Lavail Abbott. Temperatures hit triple digits Sunday. Spray parks across town were a popular choice for locals to beat the heat. "It feels really good because you're like really hot and then you just feel that cool just going down. It feels really refreshing," said Yahaira Lopez.
Meanwhile, others welcomed the sun. "I love it. I like the heat. That's why I'm sitting in the sun and not underneath the tree," said Jackie Thomas. Spray parks are open daily from noon to 7 p.m. until September, which has caused some concern as California undergoes a third year of drought.
Last week, Bakersfield city council members said water conservation is crucial in sustaining our water supply. The council says they will look into cutting down the hours at spray parks. Another go to spot to cool off was the city pool. A line of more than 100 people waited for McMurtrey Aquatic Center to open Sunday afternoon. "We're beating the heat by coming to the pool. I caught the news on Friday and it said Saturday and Sunday be at the pool so I'm here," said Jefferey Turner.
McMurtrey Aquatic Center staff say the crowd isn't as big as Saturday when they reached capacity at 615. Cooling centers are open around Kern County when temperatures reach 105 degrees in the valley.
