If you had a hard time booking a hotel room or making dinner reservations this weekend, the March Meet at Famoso Raceway played a key role.
With the nice weather, race officials said people are motivated to see the races. Local officials estimate the meet could pump millions of dollars into Kern County.
As the smoke from burned rubber filled the air, it was almost like honey calling bees, as the grandstands were packed at the Famoso Raceway east of Shafter on Saturday.
One of the main attractions was the nitro infused race cars.
Organizers estimate attendance will range between 10,000 to 15,000 people during the event.
"The average person who comes here and stays in a hotel and eats in our restaurants, if 10,000 people spend $500, that's five million dollars in the community," said Blake Bowser, Famoso Raceway.
But its not just racing that draws people to the March Meet, a local mother and daughter came to set up a stand Saturday morning to showcase a bit of drag racing history.
Pete Millar created racing themed cartoons in the 1960's and after he passed away in 2003, the sport he loved, honored him by having his ashes scattered at the Famoso racetrack.
"Coming here to the March Meet and the hot rod reunion, we meet all these fans and it brings back memories to us as well as to them," said Robin and Orah Mae Miller.
For some, the meet is a chance to pass down traditions from one generation to another.
"Traditions, family bonding, it's how we bond. We don't do Disneyland, we do the races," said Dana Morgan, parent.
Racing at Famoso continues Sunday.
