BAKERSFIELD, CA - The Kern County Cancer Fund announced its Board of Governors on Wednesday. Those twelve people will help oversee the non-profit that helps cancer patients in Kern County.
It's a board that has been in the making since the organization's inception. Now, those who have been impacted by the Kern County Cancer Fund are giving back.
The Kern County Cancer Fund is an organization that offers financial help to cancer patients and their families.
The governing board is made up of philanthropists, doctors, dentists and media personalities, among other community leaders.
The board will meet every quarter to discuss plans to expand the organization and its services throughout the county.
In the short time since the Kern County Cancer Fund has been established, the organization has touched the lives of many people in the community.
One board member, James Clark, says it's a pleasure to serve the people of Kern County. "It always feels good to help people. You know, when you get through all the other different issues of life and so forth, it boils down to individuals helping individuals. To be a part of a group that's committed to helping Kern County residents, that's what it's about."
Steve Flores and his family have benefited greatly from the Kern County Cancer Fund.
"It's hard to realize that there actually is an organization out here like this that can help you," Flores said. "It's almost unbelievable that you go, really? You're just going to give us some money to help us with this treatment? It's the cancer community that we're trying to help."
The organization also received more than $100,000 in donations from volunteer groups who have held events on behalf of the fund. All money donated to the organization goes right back to those impacted by cancer.
The Media Music Jam on June 22nd at the Crystal Palace is the next big event to raise money for the Kern County Cancer Fund.
