AIS Cancer Center partners with Tehachapi foundation

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The AIS Cancer Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital is partnering with the Tehachapi Cancer Foundation, to make sure patients in the mountain community get the treatment they need.

The Tehachapi Cancer Foundation was founded by Jim Wallace and his wife Tammy who passed away last September from colon cancer. The foundation holds community fundraisers to help cancer patients defray the costs associated with treatment.

But, now they're getting a big boost from the AIS Cancer Center and San Joaquin Community Hospital Foundation, which has pledged to help Tehachapi patients get to Bakersfield for treatment, by providing gas cards. "We don't want them to have to worry about their transportation, that's the least of their worries. We want them to get better. We want them to have that support service and that's through their family and friends and here at the AIS Cancer Center. But what this fund is going to do is help eliminate some of that stress knowing that they're going to get here to and from and it's not going to cost them a dime," said Kevin Burton, president San Joaquin Community Hospital Foundation.

"When we first started with radiation she was going five days a week for five weeks and that's when gas was almost $4.00 a gallon so it adds up. I don't care what kind of gas mileage you get, it does add up," said Jim Wallace, president Tehachapi Cancer Foundation.

The transportation fund at San Joaquin is funded by individuals and companies in our community.

State medical board files accusation against local gynecologist, plastic surgeon

The state medical board is seeking to revoke or suspend the license of Bakersfield gynecologist and plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Helliwell, alleging he mishandled the post-surgical care of one patient and was having sex with another. The accusation was filed by the California Medical Board Aug. 4.

Regulators note Helliwell already had a letter of reprimand in 2011 for negliegence in the treatment of a patient who underwent a "smart" liposuction procedure.

His treatment represented "simple departures from the standard of care, recordkeeping and advertising," the state board noted.

Helliwell will have a chance to contest the new allegations through an administrative trial.  The first step would be a settlement conference where representatives from the state and Dr. Helliwell can sit down and discuss the matter, according to Medical Board spokeswoman Cassandra Hockenson.  No dates have been set.

Staff who answered the telephone at Helliwell's Advanced Women's Health Center medical office near Brimhall and Coffee Road said he needed to speak with his lawyer first but he would return a call seeking comment.

The new accusation indicates Helliwell paid a patient for sexual intercourse, meeting the woman at motels, her apartment and at his office for the encounters.

The 23-year-old woman is not identified. She was Helliwell's patient in 2011 and 2012 and their sexual relationship continued through most of this period, the allegation says.

In a separate case, Hellweill performed a breast augmentation surgery on a woman whose incision later became infected and the implant itself became exposed through the skin, documents indicate.

That woman, also 23, told investigators her incision became infected and ruptured. Ultimately, the implant was exposed through the skin and she was told it needed to be removed.

Helliwell charged the woman $1,000 for the removal procedure seven days later.

"The operative report shows the implants had holes in them, however the patient claims that prior to surgery, (Helliwell) told her if she claimed her implants failed she could get new ones for free," the accusation indicates.

The medical board indicates this appears to be a "fraudulent attempt to gain coverage for this broken implant" calling it an "extreme departure" from normal practice.

The claim seeks revocation or suspension of Helliwell's license to practice medicine.

Family reunited with dog lost nine years ago

(KUSA) A dog that has been missing for nine years was reunited with his owners at Colorado's Foothills Animal Shelter Saturday.

The latest owner of the 10-year-old boxer mix recently moved to Denver from out of state and could no longer care for him. Heartbroken, he gave the dog to the Foothills Animal Shelter.

The shelter did a microchip scan and found that the owner information actually belonged to someone else in Tennessee. The shelter says this scenario is common, because often times people will not update microchip information after a pet has been given away. However, they still like to do follow-ups.

The information led to a man named Lloyd Goldston. He said his dog went missing at the age of one when the family moved nine years ago from Tennessee to Alabama.

"We were moving at the time and so we didn't have a lot of time that we could invest in searching all these neighborhoods that we were in," Goldston said.

Wife of local NAACP President says husband abused her

BAKERSFIELD, CA.-The local head of the NAACP is out on bail this morning, accused of beating his wife at his workplace.

Patrick Jackson's wife says the incident happened after she caught her husband in the middle of having an affair.

"I understand with him and his position and how hard it would be to understand that a person of his character would do something like this. But it does happen," Says Jazmin Davis Jackson.

She claims her husband knocked out her front two teeth, scared her arm with scratches, and caused injury to the back of her head.

We reached out to Patrick Jackson numerous times but he has not returned our calls or requests for comment.

Davis Jackson says her husband brutally beat her Sunday afternoon at the Bakersfield offices of the NAACP.

Davis Jackson says it all started when she met her husband at the office to drop off their kids so she and her mom could go see a movie.

"I was confused as to why he was not answering the door," said Davis Jackson.

Eventually she says she used her key to get inside where she found him. Thirsty, she says she went to the back of the office to get water.

"Then I look over to the side and I see feet sitting out from underneath the table and a chair that was sitting over it. It was female shoes and she was laying back," said Davis Jackson. "I said hey come on out. You woman enough to have an affair with my husband, be woman enough to come out and talk to me."

She says she confronted the woman and her husband, and pulled out her cell phone.

"When I put the camera on play, and he saw the light and heard it go click, he grabbed me and had me in like a like my back against his stomach, like a rear-necked choke," said Davis Jackson.

She says her mother told him to let her go, and he started to direct his anger toward her.

"I told him you better get your hands away from her," said Davis Jackson, "And he hauls off and punches me in the face. I'm on the floor. He hit me to the point where he knocked out my front row of teeth. I lost control of  my bladder and urinated all over myself. I was sitting there, I had blood coming down my arm from struggling to get away from him."

Eventually she ran outside with her kids where a man passing by called 9-1-1.

Patrick Jackson was arrested by the Bakersfield Police Department.

Davis Jackson says the two have had altercations in the past, and says he has pulled her arm to point where she's had bruises. But never to this point.

"I've been trying to keep things private and out of the public eye for a very long time and it escalated to this point on Sunday and enough is enough."

She says she will now file for a restraining order.

"I do love him and there is a part of me that is still in love with him," said Davis Jackson. "I don't see myself continuing on with this marriage at this point. I don't see how I could because it's just not going to stop."

Patrick Jackson is out on bail and the district attorney has not yet filed charges.

Many community members are offering prayers for the couple and their four children as they deal with this matter.
