BAKERSFIELD, CA - Being a new parent can be a challenge, but imagine having twins, triplets, or even higher order multiples.

Mother of 9 month old twins, Michelle Garner said, "We went through fertility treatments for many years and so I was surprised to be pregnant at all and then to find out it was twins was pretty mind blowing."

"We both have twins in our families so we thought that it might be possible, but we were still very, very, very surprised," said Kara Thompson, mother of 7-year-old twins.

Some local moms of multiples say they didn't know what to expect when they found out they were having more than one baby.

Vicki Robinette, mother of 6-year-old triplets said, "It's exciting but it's also unknown territory. I didn't know anybody at that time that had triplets and it was very overwhelming and scary."

Jodi Smith says she was overwhelmed when her triplets came home from the hospital. That's when she turned to the Bakersfield Families of Multiples group.

"She came by and she sat with me and she helped feed a baby and she just told me every stage is different, I can't tell you that it's going to get so much easier, but you know, you're going to make it and I think that's what our group is all about," Smith said.

Now, they're four years old and have the opportunity to meet other kids like them.

The group also provides support for the families.

"Just encouragement from other moms that you're doing it right, you're doing a good job, it's going to get better and giving you ideas to make it easier has been very valuable for me," said Garner.

This Saturday, the group is hosting a community event at My Gym north of Rosedale Highway on Coffee Road from noon to 3:00 pm.
