While President Obama's gun plan may drastically change laws in other states, local gun shops and law enforcement say California already has a lot of the proposed restrictions in place.

Gun shops like Second Amendment Sports in Bakersfield said it can't keep AR 15's and semi-automatic rifles on the shelves. On Wednesday, the number of customers grew even more, as gun owners worry their right to own some weapons may be taken away.

"Nationwide, has hit a record high," said Alex Bowman, Assistant Manager at Second Amendment Sports.

These days the sound of the cash register can be heard almost as often gunshots at Second Amendment Sports.

"The entire year we've seen a steady increase in sales," said Bowman.

Bowman said customers are buying everything. "The last few that have come in, they haven't even hit the floor before people buy them."

"I've never been into this style of weapon before, but when somebody tells me I can't, I am urged to do something about it," said Ambra who planned to buy a weapon that could possibly be banned.

Bowman said the fear may be unfounded because California already has tight restrictions on guns.

"This is more or less going to bring the rest of the country back up or on equal footing to the rest in California," said Bowman.

According to the Department of Justice, California already bans dozens of assault-style weapons, limits rounds to ten and requires every gun sale to have a background check.

"It looks like Federal laws are going to catch up with California laws," said Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

Even so, former war correspondent and Congressional candidate, Terry Phillips, said these restrictions are something the rest of the country needs to discuss.

"I think it's the right conversation to have. We have to stop fearing aspects of it," said Phillips. "Nobody who has studied this thinks that the right solution is to round up all the guns, but it's also not the right solution to say anybody should have the firepower they want."

Sheriff Donny Youngblood is taking a side on the issue. He said he didn't hear anything from the President that will stop violence against children. Youngblood said he doesn't believe the President's restrictions would have stopped the shooting at Taft Union High School last week.

"We really need to stop treating the symptoms and fix the problem, and the problem is we don't do enough to deal with mental health issues as parents, as practitioners and as sheriffs," said Sheriff Youngblood.
