Cats and dogs will get along, when their lives depend on it. Such was the case Friday morning at epic jet center. "All of these guys are leaving."
Where an epic 50 cats and dogs were loaded, together, into a private plane. "It's just something near and dear to my heart and my way of giving back. One little tiny way of giving back," says Erin Posey, owner Epic Jet Center.
Volunteers load the cats into crates. The kittens and adults are all from the Kern County Animal Shelter. "Unfortunately there aren't enough homes in Kern County for all of our cats so if it weren't for operations like this, these cats probably would have been euthanized," says Sally Breyer, Kern County Animal Control.
And the dogs come from individual rescues, people who pull them off of death row, or find them near death, wandering the streets. "There's parts in Kern County that are so literally overwhelmed with dogs just running loose. Dogs and cats. So they come from everywhere basically," says Diane Ybarra.
Some of the dogs are flying to Oregon, the others and all of the cats, are heading to Canada. "This is another copy for Bev's paperwork."
Their papers will act as their passports to cross the border and into their forever homes to the north. It's a bittersweet moment for foster parents who have taught trust and loved these animals into great pets. "There's some that you cry when you are kenneling them up and sending them away," adds Ybarra.
But these animals, one on this flight, a co-pilot, are clear for take off, and to wiggle and paw their way into the hearts of their new owners. "It'll be a Merry Christmas for all of these kitties and all of the people they go to and all of the people at the Kern County Animal Control," adds Breyer.
Pilots of Wings of Rescue donate their time and planes. They already have 2 more flights scheduled for next week.
