The busy southwest Bakersfield intersection of Stockdale Hwy. and Old River Rd. was expected to remain closed through 10 a.m. as Bakersfield Police investigated a fatal crash.
It was the second fatality Wednesday stemming from one of four major accidents across Kern County.
The 64-year-old man ran a red light at Stockdale Hwy and Old River Rd. Just before 4 a.m., striking a U.S. Mail contract carrier truck, the BPD reported. The man was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The woman driving the mail carrier truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The police investigation at the intersection was expected to last well into mid morning.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m. two cars collided on E. Panama Lane about a quarter mile east of Cottonwood Road. A car heading westbound on Panama lane drifted into the eastbound lanes, made a sharp turn and collided with a service truck, the CHP reported. The truck was going 45 to 50 miles per hour.
The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene by Hall ambulance paramedics. The driver of the truck had no major injuries. The CHP was investigating the cause of the crash, but said fog did not appear to be a factor.
Meantime, a motorcyclist suffered major injuries and had to be airlifted to KMC after he was involved in a crash with a vehicle on Weedpatch Highway at Gina Marie Dr. In Lamont around 7 a.m.
And a 30-year-old man suffered major injuries in a crash near the intersection of Ming Ave. and New Stine Rd around 3 a.m.
The driver was headed south on New Stine Rd when he left the roadway, struck a traffic box and a wall and the crossed the center divider and slammed into a tree.
The BPD was still investigating the cause of this crash.
