BAKERSFIELD, CA -- Bakersfield Congressman Kevin McCarthy will take Eric Cantor's place, becoming the house majority leader at the stroke of midnight Friday morning.
The 49-year-old Republican will assume his new role as house majority leader. He's the first ever House Majority Leader from California.
McCarthy, the current majority whip, was elected by house Republicans June 19 to succeed Cantor. The majority leader, among other things, is in charge of scheduling legislation for floor debate, planning short and long-term legislative agendas, and generally working to advance the goals of the majority party.
