BAKERSFIELD, CA.-State regulators are in Bakersfield today to discuss revised regulations on oilwell stimulation operations in Kern County, including the practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
Those rules were first imposed after passage of SB-4 last November, the state's first effort to impose stricter regulations on fracking.
The regulations cover everything from groundwater testing, to waste water disposal and even earthquake monitoring.
Officials at Doggr, the Department of oil, gas and geothermal resources, said there are no dramatic changes to the original regulations rolled out last November.
Environmental groups, as expected, are not satisfied with Doggr's revised rules, saying there are still serious regulation gaps that need to be filled.
Among them, lack of protections against Methane and other toxic air emissions, no prohibition against using unlined disposal ponds for production waste water and no environmental review requirements for single-well projects.
Today's hearing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the county Board of Supervisors Chambers in Bakersfield. The public is invited to attend.
