BAKERSFIELD, CA - We are learning more about about a deadly shooting in a quiet northwest Bakersfield neighborhood.
Police say a teenager is in custody after he shot and killed his stepfather Wednesday night.
Neighbors say it's a quiet cul-de-sac and they're shocked this happened so close to home.
The family of 37-year-old Derick Mitchell wouldn't comment about his death, saying they're making funeral arrangements.
Police say the shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on Cinnabar Court in the Pheasant Run neighborhood near Calloway Drive and Brimhall Road.
Officers say when they arrived, they found Mitchell suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was taken to Kern Medical Center where he died.
Following the shooting, police arrested the 17-year-old stepson for murder and he was booked into Juvenile Hall.
Police said they are not releasing the teen's name because he is a juvenile.
Officers also said Thursday a motive for the shooting is unknown.
