WOFFORD HEIGHTS,CA- For Kern County firefighters, fighting a wildfire at night only meant using ground resources until recently.

"Last night with the 6:30 winds and the down draft, this year for the first time that I've really known about we've been able to fight fire at night," said Cindy Thill with the U.S. Forest Service.

This comes just ten days after Kern County firefighters received training on night vision goggles during a controlled burn in Tehachapi.

Fire officials say the night vision goggles help fire pilots map out terrain and coordinate with crews on the ground.

"The fire wouldn't even illuminate it enough for us to be able to do our job safely. But with the goggles its not quite green daylight but it's pretty close. We can see everything pretty good. We can make out where the people are," said Capt. Jason Nava, with the Kern County Fire Department.

Fire officials say Saturday night a total of four fire personnel were using the goggles.

"Fighting fire at night it's a pretty good time to be doing it. Usually the winds are dying down and all those conditions that make the fire so bad during the day really don't exist," said Patrick Williams, Chief Pilot with the Kern County Fire Department.

Officials with the Kern County Fire Department say three helicopters may be flown Sunday night.

One from the county, Forest Service and L.A. County.
