BAKERSFIELD, CA -- It was scorching in the Golden Empire on Monday, A record 110 degrees had folks all over town trying to beat the heat.

Summer is here and these hot temperatures won't be going anywhere for a while. All day long the people of Bakersfield were trying their best not to bake in the sun.

"Today has been pretty hot."
"Aw, it's super hot."
"Triple digits is not easy."

The heat is on.

While the kids, fresh out of school, simmered down at local spray parks, Alexis Roberts was hard at work in the triple digit temperatures pushing her La Rosa popsicle cart in downtown Bakersfield.

"We just sit around but they come around so it basically sells itself," Roberts said.

And other local businesses enjoyed the perks of folks trying to stay cool. Maya Cinemas had an above average influx of guests Monday, including Isidro Garcia and his family.

"I didn't even want to come out in the daytime I just came here to the movies wanting to chill out, drinking my soda, and just relax it's totally cool here, have a good time," Garcia said.

And when the sun went down, many families went out for a sweet treat-a kid approved cool-down tactic.

"They always ask me let's go let's go to Tutti Frutti and we're here trying to beat the heat," said Victor Murillo who got Frozen Yogurt with his family.

But if you don't have the extra dough to spend at the movies or for fro-yo, the cooling center at the Mission at Kern County is a great place to go if you need a place to chill out.

"It is just a way that we can provide and give back to the community it seems simple but it's much needed in these triple digits," said Jamie Durham, the director of community development for the Mission at Kern County.

So prepare yourself for a sizzling, summer Bakersfield.

"It's just the beginning. Yeah we still have what like, three months?"

Thankfully, there wasn't an abundance of calls for heat-related illnesses. There were only three calls to Hall Ambulance and five to ten calls to local fire departments.
