BAKERSFIELD, CA - Saturday is National Rebuilding Day. Volunteers across the nation will gather this weekend to help rebuild veterans' homes and facilities.

Rebuilding Together Kern County needs volunteers to work on the post. While this one day highlights the need to upgrade facilities, organizers say there is much more to be done.

VFW Post 97 Commander Bobby Hanks said, "It's kind of a gathering point for most of the veterans. We're the largest post out here. So we really want to beautify it up a little bit, so we can get the younger veterans in and there families."

Hanks says this is his home.

"We've done a lot of lipstick repairs out here to make it look nicer, for our troops when they come back, but there's still a lot more work that needs to be done," said Hanks.

Rebuilding Together Kern County will help with some of that work Saturday.

Rebuilding Together Kern County Secretary Rena Kay Schrade said, "Some mopping and washing of windows and decobwebbing and that sort of thing. The tasks aren't high skilled at this point, but it just takes time and the more hands, it goes faster and it's a lot of fun."

Although most of the work is aesthetic, it makes a big difference.

Schrader said, "You have to consider that the men that pass through these doors have given to our county and they come here, they're coming for social services, just to talk with one another, for a meal, whatever. It's a good feeling to have something that looks nice and not run down."

Hanks says the community's help is appreciated.

"We couldn't have done it without them. It would've broke our post," he said.

If you'd like to help -- come out to VFW Post 97 on S. Union Avenue Saturday at 7 a.m. Organizers said they need all the help they can get.

Rebuilding Together Kern County has about 15 applications to do work like this, but only has funding for a few projects this year.
