BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A habitat conservation group voted Thursday morning to purchase nearly 900 acres of land along the Kern River Bluffs in Bakersfield.

In 2009, this land was set for a development, including more than a thousand homes.   Now, the 847 acres of land, known as The Canyons, has fallen into bankruptcy by the land's owner, allowing the Metro Habitat Conservation Plan trust group to purchase it for more than five million dollars, to preserve the city's natural habitat.

The city says the land, once purchased, would be managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Now it's up to the bankruptcy court to approve the purchase.
