BAKERSFIELD,CA-- The weather may have turned chilly but it did not dampen spirits as one Bakersfield man brought his family to the inaugural Campout Against Cancer at the State Farm Sports Village in Southwest Bakersfield.
"I want to support this group and hopefully they can support other families in the future,” said Pete Espinoza.
The event is organized by the Kern County Cancer Fund. The fund was set up specifically to help local patients defray some of the costs of fighting cancer.
"We saw a lot of the middle class working people falling through the cracks. Even if you have a good copay you could be looking at 20 to 30 thousand (dollars) in a years time,” said one of the organizers Sheryl Gallion.
Since 2013, more than 90 local residents have been helped, residents like Oleta Collins.
" I could not get out of bed if I did not have Neulasta. It makes us to where the next day is bearable. Without, its just not ok and that is one tiny thing the Kern County Cancer Fund does."
