BAKERSFIELD,CA- Seven-year-old Issac Pizano enjoys playing with his toy trucks and video games.
"Isaac is definitely goofy," said Issac's mother, Rachel Johnson.
From the outside he appears to be just like any other 7-year-old. But unlike most kids his age, he has to trade in playing with friends at school for chemotherapy, once a week for the next 42 weeks.
"It was very sudden how we found out. We just went for headaches then we're being told we're going to go to Madera," said Johnson.
Issac was diagnosed with cancer at age five. He woke up from a nap one day and saw double images. His family took him to Memorial Hospital where doctors performed an MRI. The results showed he had a cyst on his brain. Twelve hours later, he had brain surgery at Madera Children's Hospital.
"They were able to biopsy the tumor and they also put a shunt in his head to drain the fluid because his real problem at that point was that there was pressure on his brain," said Issac's grandmother Margaret Johnson.
Issac says he sometimes feels lethargic after chemo. But he says he still has fight left in him for locals going through similar life challenges.
"I don't want them to be sick and I don't want them to have pain," said Issac Pizano.
This weekend, Issac and his family will Campout Against Cancer, the first of what will be an annual event to raise funds for the Kern County Cancer Fund. Through the fund, 100 local patients have received the more than $550,000. The fund helps eligible, local recipients with insurance premiums, prescriptions and other related medical expenses.
Campout Against Cancer is Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5 at the State Farm Sports Village on 7747 Ashe Road.
