BAKERSFIELD, CA- A man was killed when driving the wrong-way on Highway 58 and crashing head-on with a tow truck.
The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday at Bealeville Road, just east of Caliente.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a Nissan Altima was on the right shoulder, when he made a u-turn across traffic lanes and ended up heading west in the eastbound lanes.
A witness said the car was going about 65 miles per hour when it crashed into the tow truck.
The driver of the car was killed on impact. His name has not been released.
The tow truck driver, Travis West, 32, of Bakersfield was not hurt, but oil he was carrying spilled onto the roadway.
CHP said the eastbound lanes on Highway 58 were closed for 7 hours and reopened just before 12:30 a.m.
The CHP is trying to determine why the driver was headed the wrong way.
