BAKERSFIELD, CA -- We are saddened to report the passing of longtime Bakersfield physician and environmentalist, Doctor Arthur Unger.
Unger died Saturday of congestive heart failure. For more than 30 years, Art Unger was the face of the Sierra Club in Kern County, which has never been known as a bastion of environmentalism.
If there was a hearing on water, windmills, oil production or any development project that carried with it environmental risks, there was a virtual certainty that Art Unger would be there weighing in. And many times his wife Lorraine would be right there by his side.
The Ungers are widely credited with resurrecting the local chapter of the Sierra Club in the 1980s. "He was very dedicated selfless, no one really cared more, no one really worked harder for the community, for the environment in the community, for environmental justice issues than Arthur and of course Art was a soft-spoken man who never quite lost that New Yorker accent despite spending more than 50 years practicing family medicine here in the Valley. And he will be deeply missed," says Gordon Nipp, Sierra Club.
Dr. Arthur Unger, dead at the age of 79.
