BAKERSFIELD, CA - A man wielding a machete got into a tense standoff with police in southeast Bakersfield on Tuesday.
Police say 23-year-old Augustine Patino stabbed his father then injured a family dog before waiving the machete violently at police.
Officers tried to take down Patino with non-lethal weapons, but they say they could not do the job as Patino was not going to surrender easily.
Police moved in quickly to subdue Patino after, they say, he threw a machete into the air in the 3000 block of Lotus Lane.
Police tried to first use non-lethal weapons.
"A taser which was ineffective in this case, and we used a pepper ball gun which was ineffective in this case also," said Sgt. Joe Grubbs.
Officers believe Patino was under the influence of drugs.
"There was some information he had been hallucinating beginning last night in the residence," said Sgt. Grubbs.
While Patino was confronting officers in front of the house, police sent a team to the rear of the home to move family members to safety.
That's when they noticed Patino's father was injured.
"Suspect's father who suffered some injuries to his hands and wrists," said Sgt. Grubbs.
The father was taken to the hospital for treatment and is recovering.
Officers bound Patino's arms and legs and carried him away from the scene before he was taken to a hospital.
The dog Patino injured suffered a minor wound and his family, with the help of Animal Control, was able to treat the dog.
Patino faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a weapon, cruelty to animals, and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
