BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A woman is under arrest following a chase and crash Tuesday morning in northeast Bakersfield.
Police say Officer Sonja Peery observed a speeding vehicle westbound in the 1200 block of Columbus Street. She pulled the vehicle over to issue a traffic citation. When Officer Peery exited her vehicle the driver of the vehicle sped away.
The driver, Cinthia Rizo, 30 of Bakersfield, continued westbound on Columbus running the red light at River Boulevard where she struck a northbound vehicle described as a black Chevrolet Cobalt. The force of the collision pushed the Cobalt into the light standard knocking the light down and causing the Cobalt to catch fire.
Rizo was taken into custody at the scene of the collision. Both Rizo and the driver of the Cobalt complained of pain and were transport to an area hospital for treatment.
The vehicle Rizo was driver was reported stolen out of County jurisdiction. Rizo was arrested for Grand Theft Auto, Possession of Stolen Property, Speeding, Resisting Arrest and two felony warrants for narcotics related charges. Rizo is on AB109 California Prison Realignment probation.
The intersection of Columbus and River was not closed however; traffic was congested for a short time. Kern County traffic engineers responded to repair the light standard.
Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call Bakersfield Police at (661) 327-7111.
