OILDALE - A bloody attack in oildale sent two people to the hospital Thursday.
Sheriff's investigators say a group of pit bull dogs attacked a man and woman, sending the woman to the hospital
One of the owners of the pit bulls says the attack could have been avoided.
"All I know is there's blood right here and they shot my dog."
The owner of the house in the 800 block of Washington Avenue wasn't home when a man came looking for his son who had been living there. When he entered the property, he was attacked by two pit bulls.
"As he was being attacked, the female victim who lives in an apartment to the front, heard the attack and came out of her apartment, armed herself with a shovel, and attempted to assist him, attempted to fight the two pit bulls with a shovel," said Ray Pruitt, Kern County Sheriff's Department.
But, while that woman tried to fight the dogs off, she tripped and fell and the dogs turned on her.
"She's about to go in to have surgery because she can't feel her legs. She has gashes," said neighbor Calla Harper.
Fearing for the woman's safety, Sheriff's deputies shot the pit bulls. Two died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds. One was later euthanized by Animal Control.
"This was a vicious attack and if it had gone on much longer this could have been very serious if not fatal for these two victims," added Pruitt.
The aunt of the dogs' owner, Brenda Scott, says she understands the deputies' actions, but says the attack could have been avoided.
"I can't comprehend why people cannot comprehend a sign that says 'guard dog on duty'," said Scott.
Scott says the female pit bull that was killed was aggressive because she was protecting her litter of puppies that are just five days old.
The woman who was attacked was bitten on her arms, torso, and legs.
The man was released from the hospital, but would not talk to us on camera for fear of retaliation.
