BAKERSFIELD – The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District is cautioning people in Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare and Kern Counties that recent wildfires could cause health hazards.

Lightning strikes have started several fires in the Sierra National Forest, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and Sequoia National Forest.

Valley air officials say smoke from the Aspen Wildfire in Fresno County and smoke from the other fires may impact the eastern parts of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare and Kern Counties, including the foothill, mountain areas, and valley floor.

“If you can see or smell smoke in your area, you are most likely being affected,” said Samir Sheikh, the Air District’s director over air quality analysis. “If possible, stay inside to avoid breathing in the smoke.”

Air officials say people with heart or lung disease should follow their doctor’s advice for dealing with the extra pollution. They also say that children and the elderly should avoid prolonged exposure, depending on conditions.

Residents can check the nearest air monitor for local conditions. Visit the Real-time Air Advisory Network page on the District’s website to subscribe for free, at valleyair.org.
