FORT TEJON - A new fire in the Grapevine prompted evacuations Tuesday morning.

Two new small fires started in the Digier Canyon area, west of I-5, north of the Fort Tejon exit. They merged together near the Rancho Fire that firefighters fully contained Monday night.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for homes along Digier Road on Tuesday and people were told to head to El Tejon Elementary School.

It's was another hot and busy day for firefighters in the hills, battling to keep the flames contained.

Helicopters raced to the Grapevine to drop water or slurry, in an effort to help firefighters from Kern County and Los Angeles battle what is being called the Water Fire.

"We are getting more crews here on scene. We are seeing the containment come up a little bit, more hand crews. Any time you can get hand crews in there, start punching up the line, you will see that containment start to come up," said Corey Wilford, Kern County Fire Department.

No injures to civilians or firefighters were reported and no structures damaged.

Not only are firefighters fighting this fire, they are also preparing the ground to prevent mudslides.

"After a wildfire comes through we have rehab. These rehab teams will get out there. They will create water bars to put on the side of the hill to prevent erosion. Sometimes they will put hay out. When you get into forest areas they will try to repopulate those areas with new growth," add Wilford.

Kern County fire officials say the the majority of residents left when the reverse 9-1-1 call went out.
