The American Red Cross is encouraging people to create a family disaster plan.
A disaster prep rally was held Saturday morning at the Fox Theatre in downtown Bakersfield.
The Red Cross along with PG&E hope to increase disaster preparedness throughout the Central Valley.
There are simple steps everyone can take to protect their home and family, organizers say.
"Just making sure that we go over safety tips when it comes to home fires, really checking our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, learning how to use a fire extinguisher can save lives and save property," said Alex Villa, Regional Community Preparedness manager.
