Lake Isabella boat docks removed

LAKE ISABELLA, CA-- A less than adequate snow pack has left Lake Isabella with lower than average water levels and has made some people like Jim Deukmejian from Los Angeles weary about visiting the lake.

"It's risky to spend three hours to drive up here and $100 in gas to come up here and not know what the lake is going to be like," Deukmejian said.

The U.S. Forest Service had to remove the boat docks around the lake because of the low water.

"To be able to not have a hazard because the docks are just sitting there," said Ranger Al Watson with the U.S. Forest Service.

"We have had to remove the docks and allow folks to just be able to back their boating craft right back into the water."

Without docks, boaters can get stuck on the sandy shores like Rudy Distaso.

"Well with the two wheel drive truck, I am actually kind of limited," said Distaso. "I thought I could get out of this one but obviously not."

Distaso pulled his truck out of the sand with help from workers at the French Gulch Marina.

Local businesses are feeling the pinch, but Debra Chase, owner of French Gulch Marina, says there is still plenty of water to play in.

"But it's still the largest lake by far in Southern California," Chase said.

"There is still a lot of water to recreate out there. We are trying to educate the public to say hey, we are an amazing destination to come to. We are an hour away from Bakersfield, we are couple of hours away from LA. There is no reason not to come."
