BAKERSFIELD, CA - With the number of burglaries and break-ins increasing, home security is becoming a bigger issue.

Advancing technology has made it easy to see what's going on at home, when you're not there. An
interactive program makes checking on your home as easy as picking up your phone, or looking at your computer.

The American Dream Security Systems manager Garland Perry said, "You can control your home from the palm of your hand."

He says high tech programs allow the user to activate an alarm, unlock a door and generally know what's happening at the location by logging onto a computer or cell phone.

"I have it set that if there's a breach, it will immediately text me on my smartphone and tell me what's going on and it'll tell me was it the window, the backdoor," said Garland.

He says they can be set up to monitor or control specific areas of the property, depending on the user's need.

"They want to be able to look at their backyard to see what they're dogs are doing, they want to see in the next room, what their babies, they want to be able to see when their kids come home," he said.

Perry says the cameras also decrease the risk of a break-in.

He said, "Once people see cameras, they don't want to go to jail. So they're going to go to the business that they don't see any protection."

There is an initial fee starting at $99, along with a monthly rate beginning at about $45 and the cost of each camera is about $250. The rates can go up -- depending on how intricate the system is.

The interactive program can be accessed by devices with internet access.
