State warns protect yourself before travel

SACRAMENTO - With the spring holidays approaching in the next weeks, many Californians are heading to the Philippines or other countries where measles outbreaks are occurring or measles circulates in the population.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) strongly encourages all Californians to make sure they are protected against measles and other dangerous diseases before they go abroad.

“Measles is extremely contagious and can be very serious. The best way to protect yourself and your family against measles is with the Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination, which is 97 percent effective after two doses,” says Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director of the CDPH Center for Infectious Disease Prevention and state epidemiologist.

“Vaccination is especially important for those who plan to travel internationally, which places them at high risk of getting the disease and spreading it to others after they come home.”

The current outbreak beginning in December 2014 is likely to have started from a traveler who got measles overseas.

Most cases of measles in the United States in 2014 were associated with travel to and from the Philippines, where measles has been widespread.

Other cases were associated with travel elsewhere in Asia, Europe or Africa. Measles has also been spread at international airports.

Immunization with MMR vaccine protects against measles while abroad and back at home.

Unvaccinated Californians who are traveling outside of North or South America should receive the MMR vaccine before they go.

Infants who are traveling abroad can be vaccinated with an early dose as young as six months of age (though they should also have the two standard doses of the MMR at 12-15 months and at 4-6 years of age).

Check with your health care provider to see whether you and your family are fully protected against measles, influenza and other diseases that are common in other countries.

Travelers can find helpful information about the vaccinations needed on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

Travelers should also watch for the symptoms of measles after returning home.

Measles begins with a fever that lasts for a couple of days, followed by a cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and rash.

The rash typically appears first on the face, along the hairline, and behind the ears and then affects the rest of the body.

If you think you or a family member may have measles, promptly contact your health care provider by telephone before entering a medical facility, where the disease could spread to others.

The journey of Pi: Battling for a better future

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Just about everyone has struggled with their weight at some point in their lives, but for some, that struggle can live on for a lifetime.

James Pizano, 31, is a football coach at Frontier High School who is battling the bulge one day at a time.

He weighs more than 500 pounds, But Pi is on a weightloss journey and he's not taking that journey alone.

"It's like god spoke to me and said, 'Hey, you need to start taking care of yourself,'" said Pizano.

There's an old Chinese proverb that says, "every thousand mile journey begins with a single step."

"I feel like all of this stuff is coming down on me, god has purpose for me and I need to get it together," said Pizano.

For James 'Pi' Pizano, the journey has just begun.

"It's not easy to just snap overnight. And that's what i realize now. as i just start this, it ain't going to happen in a month, hey I am cured.  It's a long process," siad Pizano.

Putting on the weight has been a long process too.

Pi weighed 350 pounds when he graudated from college in 2006.

Every year since, he's put on another 20.

"I will go to the store, and get me goodies and milk and just sit there and eat it." he said.

Now, his goal is simple: to fit back into his old clothes.

He never ate breakfast before. Now he's doing healthy meal prep.

And Mondays and Wednesdays he's in the gym or at the park at Riverwalk working out.

But he isn't doing it alone.

"if i could say anything, he's more like a son than anything else," said friend Mike Butler.

Butler met Pi in 1998 when Pi was a freshman at Foothill High School.

"Even though he was large, he was an incredible athlete. He had incredible footwoork. He was smooth as silk on the basketball court. We knew we had something special in this young man," said Butler.

Pi has something special in Butler -- a friend who is holding him accountable -- every step of the way.

"His smile was gone," Butler said. "The happy guy that we knew for so many years had disappeared and you could tell there was definitely times of depression.

And so pi's journey was born -- complete with a facebook page.

"I've coached him in the past and i've seen what he is capable of accomplishing. As long as someone holds his feet to the fire," Butler said.

Pi is posting diaries and videos of his workout; the idea is to keep himself accountable.

According to Kaiser Permanente's Dr. Benjamin Ha, Keeping yourself accountable is a good idea..

"if your idea is to put yourself out there, ask yourself for support, positive support? I think that's a great idea," said Ha.

Pi recognizes his weakness is food and stress eating.

"It's so hard to change habits, especially if that's the way you were raised, or the way that you have always seen yourself. I will say by making small changes you can move in the right direction," Pizano said.

And so the struggle continues, one day  at a time.

"I think back to when I played football, you know 'refuse to lose.'  -- hit the weight room -- keep you accountable for your team. Now you need to be accountable for yourself, and this is something that ain't going to be easy; it's going to be hard.  But you can do it...and i am going to do it." Pizano said.

To follow Pi's journey, you can check out his Facebook page.
