KGET is 'Serving Up Change' with a new challenge for families

0
0
How can you bring your family closer together? What meal time traditions can you start in your home to keep your family together and your children away from negative influences?

Sunrise has launched "Serving Up Change," a challenge to Kern County families to dish-up creative ways to bring parents and children together around meals and healthy activities.

Studies show that families who share meals at least five to seven times per week reduce children's risk of using drugs and alcohol. Kids also tend to have more nutritious diets and do better in school.

Throughout the rest of the year we'll profile different families and how moms, dads, and kids are making healthy changes to keep their family together.

Let us know what changes you're making with your family by emailing Sunrise reporter Ryann Blackshere Vargas at ryannblackshere@kget.com or send us a message on our Facebook page.

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Honor Flight Kern County is able to take local veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C. thanks to our generous community.

Last month, we introduced you to a Bakersfield teen who raised $1,800 for Honor Flight. That's enough money to send one veteran to D.C.

This past weekend, 14-year-old Ethan Lockman was able to see firsthand how his donation made an impact on local veterans. He accompanied a World War II Veteran on the trip.

Lockman said, "These veterans gave so much to us and the least we can do is just to honor them in this stage of their life."

As a guardian, Lockman experienced the memorials with the veterans. He says it was a life-changing experience.

"The memorial was really emotional. I've seen it once before, but seeing it with a veteran, who's never seen it, who worked so hard and is finally being recognized and to see that in them that they realize that they're cared for and loved for is amazing," said Lockman.

The next Honor Flight will be in November.

Veteran receives Bakersfield home

BAKERSFIELD, CA - An Iraq war veteran and his family spent their first night Thursday,in a newly remodeled mortgage-free Bakersfield home.  They got it as part of Operation Homefront, a national non-profit.

Operation Homefront has given over 400 homes to veterans and their families. Its latest means no more moving for the Bruno family.

At the end of a southwest Bakersfield cul-de sac, the Bruno family, Bryn, wife Kimber, and kids, Skyler and Kaya stand at their new front door, waiting to see what lies on the other side.

Bryn served with the Marines in Iraq. His family moved multiple times with the military. But, when he suffered a brain injury in service, that ended as well as his construction career. Thursday, however, he got to hold the keys to his future, thanks to Operation Homefront and unlock his family's new life.

"I didn't know what to expect and to walk in and see a beautiful home was just a great thing," said Bryn Bruno after seeing his home for the first time.

"My oldest has been in multiple schools and she's only in fourth grade. So it's going to be, she's happy we don't have to move again. I mean, we're set," said Kimber Bruno.

Chase Bank donated the home to Homes on the Homefront and remodeled it with new appliances and custom touches, like a shower handrail for Bryn.

"This is my first time in a two story house," said fourth grader, Skyler Bruno

"They might want to do some home improvement projects but that's a privilege only homeowners get so now they are able to take part in that," said Grace Lee of Operation Homefront.

As Bryn's daughters enjoy climbing the stairs to their new rooms, he was just taking it all in.

"Just to know, I don't have to worry about anything and this is ours for the rest of our lives. We don't have to move anymore or go anywhere and we can paint it how we want. We can make everything look like the way we want it to look it's just awesome," said Bryn.

Bryn and his wife were commuting from Porterville where they lived to take their girls to school in Bakersfield. Now,
one of the things they look forward to the most, they can walk them there.

Abernathy charter school closing

TEHACHAPI, CA- The Abernathy Collegiate Charter School's independent school board voted Thursday night to close the school's doors.

The school thought they would fill desks with 150 students this year, but now only have 67 students.

"It was a number of things. There is no one villain here," said Shyanne Ledford, Abernathy principal.

Some students who attended the school last year left because they wanted to play sports, didn't want to be retained, and some wanted to join friends at other schools.

But others gravitated toward the charter school because of the attention and additional academic support that they say they didn't receive at Tehachapi High or other schools in the area.

"Last year before I came here I was at THS and I actually like this school a lot more because you get that more one on one help you need," said student Marie Sink. "And I'm doing so much better than I was at THS. I've been making better decisions both behavioral and grade wise."

Students and parents had started social media campaigns and spread word around the community about the school, but it just wasn't enough.

"I'm just really disappointed that they didn't give us parents and the community more time to react and it seems like their decision was already made before even opening this meeting tonight," said parent Christina Miller. "And I mean its very heartbreaking I mean our kids don't even get a two week notice to find a new place to go."

Much of the blame has also been placed on accounting mishaps.

The school's third party accounting provider budgeted $87,000 worth of salary funds to come from the wrong financial source.

"One of the biggest mistakes though that you can attribute to that 87 was that they falsely attributed some of the salaries to a grant that you can't attribute salaries to," said Ledford. "And so on paper it looks like oh no there's money here that should be here or whatever. It's not an actual money deficit it's just that we attributed something that couldn't be attributed."

Though this school year was so short, parents are thankful for all the school provided their children.

"What they did here it was all from their heart. And every teacher, the principal, everyone worked hard and really cared about their students here. Its really sad to see that go," said Miller.

Tuesday, September 30 is the last day of school.

Students now have the option of attending the local high school or other charter schools in the area.

Abernathy administration said they will be helping students and parents make the transition as easily as possible.
